Inherently Charged Particle (ICP) Sensor Design

Ambient particles from natural and anthropogenic sources are a major cause of premature deaths globally. While there many instruments suitable for scientific measurements aerosols, better methods long-term monitoring purposes still needed, especially low-maintenance, affordable solutions ultrafine particles. In this article, we present new sensor design prototype, the inherently charged particle (ICP) sensor, which uses preexisting electrical charge to measure concentration, instead employing charging mechanism, as is typical based on detection. When ICP-sensor employed in conjunction with another instrument, information state can also be derived. We results laboratory characterization well two suggested applications: 1) engine exhaust 2) ambient traffic environment, where compare response three concentration metrics: number; surface area; 3) mass. The proved both applications, signal correlated best number emission area measurements. measured concentrations were well-correlated ( ${R}^{\,2} >0.8$ ) theoretical values calculated size distribution assuming an equilibrium distribution.
